Many hotels and motels are increasingly becoming aware of the need to provide guests with comfortable and environmentally friendly surroundings. Many quests suffer from asthma, allergy or multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). There are organizations such as the Green Hotels Association that are providing the hospitality industry with information and training programs designed to save water & energy, reduce waste and protect the indoor and outdoor environments. In some cases, there is an effort to carefully select finishes and furnishings that are classified as low-emitting volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The cleaning chemicals are environmentally friendly. Prompt attention is given to water intrusion problems following the IICRC S500 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration. If mold problems arise, they follow the IICRC S520 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Mold Remediation. In order to properly establish a scope of work, the S500 and S520 recommend the use of an indoor environmental professional (IEP) to assess the damage by sampling for contaminants and to determine the extent of the damage.
