Performing remediation services in today’s market place can be precarious from a liability standpoint. How does a remediation firm adequately establish an accurate scope of work without sampling? Either the area of remediation is too small and does not completely address the contaminated area or too large and costs more to remediate than is necessary. In the first scenario, area of containment too small, you also have the added problem of explaining why you failed post-remediation verification. Did you fail because you were not accurately determine the scope of work or because to failed to maintain containment and contaminated the area outside containment? The answer to that question can not easily be answered. However, pre-remediation sampling can help to answer the question of what areas are contaminated and thereby establish the scope of work.
